Cody ‘Bonzai’ Bova heads into another two-race weekend with his 360ci Sprint Car after grabbing two Top 10 finishes last weekend.
Bova competed in his first 360 Patriot Sprint Tour race on Friday at Raceway 7. The format for PST is a little different than normal, with using passing points in heat races to help line up the top spots in the feature. Bova started 6th in his heat and finished 3rd. This put him in 4th place in passing points and putting him in the redraw for the top 8 positions. Bova pulled a #2 pill, lining him up on the outside of the front row for the feature event beside Jared Zimbardi. Bova ran third for quite some time after dropping back to 6th after several cautions late in the race.
“Friday was a really fun night,” said Bova. “We ran really good in our heat and ended up getting enough passing points to make the redraw for the feature. I wish we wouldn't have had as many cautions in the feature or we may have finished better but overall it was a great night. For my first time running with the Patriot Sprint Tour and at Raceway 7, I'm happy and excited to get back there in a few weeks.”
On Saturday, Bova went “double-duty” at Mercer Raceway Park and competed in both the 305 Sprint Car division and 410 Sprint Car division. Bova was the fastest during qualifying in the 305s and this lined him up 3rd in the lone heat race where he finished 3rd. He was set to line up 4th in the feature but discovered a problem with the motor after the heat race so he took a lap and pulled off.
In the 410 Sprint division, Bova competed with his 360ci. 22 cars were present and Bova qualified mid-pack at 11th. Bova lined up 5th in the heat race and advanced one position to finish 4th behind big name drivers, Danny Holtgraver and Lee Jacobs. Bova lined up 11th in the feature and finished 8th.
Weather permitting, Bova will be headed on the road with the 360ci Sprinters of the NRA Sprint Invaders/Great Lake Super Sprints on Friday to Limaland Motorsports Park and on Saturday to Waynesfield Raceway Park.
“We have had some solid runs with the 360,” said Bova. “We learn something new every time we hit the track and have been really consistent. We haven't finished out of the Top 10 yet with the 360 so I'm hoping to keep up the momentum and see what happens this weekend.”
